Features
Administrator:
File Associations. You can install cView as the default viewer of rpt files. So if you send a rpt with saved data to a cView user, they just need to click on the rpt file to open in and view inside cView.
Database Security. cView stores all the database security information prior to processing the report. You can lock this away from the user, so they never see the database password.
Ease of Control. You manage a folder of reports and use the local network security to decide who can view which reports.
Secure Subreports. If your report includes a subreport that requires a database password, cView can process the report. Some report viewers do not include this feature.
Now, as an administrator, start putting all of these pieces together. What emerges is a "feature set" that goes well beyond the software menu. For example:
Reduced TCO. Your total cost of ownership of your Business Intelligence reporting system is drastically reduced because cView is simple, flexible, and powerful. It has the functionality you need, without the bells and whistles that force users to drive tech support nuts with trouble calls.
Inexpensive upgrade path. Face it. You're going to upgrade your version of Crystal Reports some time. Why make that process inherently expensive via a Web-based viewing solution when you can make it inherently cost-effective with a desktop-based viewing solution?
Ease in scalability. cView makes it easy to add seats to your business intelligence system. Just buy another low-cost licensing pack, and you're good to go. For repeat customers, we provide options that eliminate complicated license management.
User:
Desktop Shortcut. You can create a shortcut on your desktop to run a report with one click of the mouse. The shortcut just needs to call cView and the report you wish to process.
Ease of Use. Report design is a specialized task requiring a high level of skill. But once the report is designed and tested, others may just want to process the report. In contrast, View has been designed to be very easy to use. It is as simple as clicking a toolbar button, or using a menu to do a File/Open on a rpt file.
Interactive Reports. If a report uses parameters, cView will prompt the user with the questions and allow them to select answers from pick lists. cView supports all parameter types including multi-value, range, and multi-value/ range.
One-click Print and Export. With one click of the toolbar, cView will print or export the report without requiring you to preview it first.
Output Flexibility. A viewed report can be exported to other formats including PDF, Excel, Word, XML, and csv. The results can be printed, emailed, or saved in a disk folder.
Report Instances. cView can create a instance of your report. This is a report with saved data that you want to archive or store for later viewing.
Set Print Date. You can set the print date prior to running a report so the reports process at a specific time. This is useful for running reports as at another historical point in time.
View History, Folder and Instances. You can select a view of all the reports in a folder, the history of the last ten reports or all the reports in the instances folder. Then you just select the report and can print, view or export that report.
Details
What cView is:
cView is a powerful Crystal Reports viewer that allows users to work with (and view) reports in ways that other desktop viewers do not.
cView:
Saves money.
Improves performance.
Reduces tech support calls.
Yes, cView works with Citrix systems.
Yes, cView works with Terminal server systems.
If someone e-mails you a Crystal Report and you have access to your database, most Crystal Report viewers will allow you to run the report. cView does this, as well. But, it also allows you to process the report against live data. Thus, it is a true Crystal Reports viewer that doesn't consign you to working with outdated reports. Or to building information silos.
Once you've installed the cView license, you'll be able to modify many reports, print settings, and display settings. cView allows a user to dynamically change report file locations at run time. This works for data file based reports using FoxPro, Btrieve, or MS-Access.
Easy to use. User calls to tech support are about nil.
The user sees a simple screen with a list of reports.
The user selects the desired report and clicks "view."
cView displays the report.
If your users are comfortable using File/Open in other programs they have all the instructions they need to use all the features in cView. They find the Crystal Report and process it live against the database. For users who want even less interaction, cView can be set up to run their favorite report by clicking a desktop icon.
It really is that simple. Yet, cView is powerful and inexpensive.
Users can also:
Refresh against live data.
View reports with saved data.
Change parameters for print and display.
Set up alerts.
Export a report to other formats, such as Excel, PDF, Word, XML, and csv.
Drill down into the report, just as if they had a Crystal license.

The license for any of the cView family of products consists of an XML file. The process of generating the XML file and installing it is actually quite simple, but we cover it here in detail.
In one or more of your e-mail receipts, you will find a License Key. You need to use this to generate the XML license that will unlock your product. There are two methods, depending on which software you are using:
cView Products
For all cView products except cViewSERVER, REMOTE, and BATCH:
Use the menu item Help/Activate product to display the form below.
Enter the name you wish to use for the license and the Activation code we sent you.
Click the "Apply" button to generate a license file for your application.
Activation Form: Click image for larger rendition.
cViewBATCH, cViewSERVER, cViewREMOTE
cViewBATCH has the activation mechanism inside cViewCONNECT. For cViewSERVER, the product activation mechanism is inside cViewREMOTE. Enter the activation information on the main form. The cViewREMOTE screen looks like the image below. Please note that cViewSERVER doesn't present a user interface--you interface with it through cViewREMOTE.
Activation Form: Click image for larger rendition.
All programs with Product Activation access it from the Help/Activate Product menu item. cViewBATCH is command line, so doesn't have a help menu. The help menu is in the cViewCONNECT form that is used to load the Database passwords, although I'm in the middle of coding it from the command line as well. One of our users suggested we support including the cViewBATCH database user and password on the command line, and product activation seemed a natural extension of that.
To install your license, just place your license key XML file in the same folder in which you are storing the program.
Examples:
c:/Program Files/CrystalTools/cView/
x:/Admin/Programs/BusinessIntel/cViewMANAGER/
In the first example, the program is in the traditional local hard drive location for programs.
In the second example, the program is in a network folder provided for administrators.
First, install the trial version. This step applies to most cView family products. If there is no trial version available, this means the program files also came with the license. To find the trial files, go back to the product page where you bought the program. There, you'll find a link to the download page.
When you get your license key, simply copy it to the same directory where you installed the trial file.
XML eliminates many problems associated with other file types. The simple process of dropping this file into your program location saves you the hassle many software vendors put you through. Not all of us enjoy going through 16 screens and typing in an exhausting number of letters and numbers.
The information here will help you solve problems you have with your license installation.
Problem #1: There was no license key in the e-mail you sent.
Analysis: You received multiple e-mails, including text and HTML versions. You will find the license key in at least two of these. The system sends these automatically and we receive a cc.
Solution: Contact us to re-send, if need be.
Problem #2: The license key doesn't work.
Analysis: The license key (text string) sent to you immediately after purchase allows you to generate the needed XML file.
Solution: Follow the instructions to generate the XML file. Make sure your copy and paste process did not append or prepend a space onto the text string. If this process isn't working, then we can send you a new license key or we can send you an actual XML file. Contact us--we don't want you to have licensing problems!
Problem #3: I distinctly remember installing the license key, and we have been using the program. Now it stopped working.
Analysis: That was probably a temporary license key we sent you for some reason.
Solution: You'll have to contact us for the permanent key. The problem is most likely our fault, and we'll hop on this right away. Simply "Reply All" with your confirmation e-mail and ask for the key.
Problem #4: I received the license key, but no download instructions. How do I get the software?
Analysis: Our licensing process assumes you downloaded a trial copy, first.
Solution: You can go back to product page on which you bought the license for the product, or you can go to our download page here: http://www.chelseatech.net/download.htm.
FAQs
What is cView? It is a report viewer that can view Crystal Reports in ways that other viewers cannot.
What is a report viewer? Software that allows you to view reports developed by skilled Crystal Reports designers.
Who Needs a Report Viewer? Users who want to see reports that were developed by a skilled Report Designer.
Crystal Reports is widely used to present information stored in company and personal databases. A Report Designer creates the report instructions to control the data selection and presentation of the report.
Rather than wait for the Report Designer to be available, other people can use cView to process the report when they want to.
Could they view reports any other way? Yes. With Crystal Reports 7 and earlier, the Report Designer could create compiled reports and distribute those to the Users.
Another option is Web delivery (for Crystal Reports versions 8 and 9). A third option is available for those using the Seagate Info software and a fourth is the free viewer. All of these have weaknesses that cView overcomes.
