Crystal Reports: Gauge Charts

Gauge charts first appeared in Crystal Reports 9.0 and are a useful way to display actual values against multiple targets.

You can use the “Quality Bands” to define up to 5 ranges or thresholds for your results to be compared against. Then when you have some actual data in the preview, select each band and right click to select a color for that band. You can then see how your real data fit into the different quality bands.

Are you maximizing the results you expect, or are your data ambling along in a safe range?

CR Chart is a great charting tool. Click the image below and check it out!

Color code your data with a thermometer or gauge chart

Another request came in to ask if there was some way to present the data as a thermometer chart with 10 scale units. The first thought was to use a rounded box, with 10 multicolored boxes inside.

Then use conditional formatting to suppress the boxes for each data point. See on the thermometer on the right →

Or this could be an opportunity to display the data in a Gauge chart (below):

Some useful formatting options on a gauge chart

In the Chart expert select “Gauge” as the chart type. This can be placed in the report header to display gauges for each group in the report, or place it in the group header or footer to display a larger gauge as
each group is displayed.

Under Chart options / there is an option for “Quality Bands”. Set the values for each band.

You can then select the band back in preview and use the right mouse menu item Chart Options / Selected Item to select a background color for the
