Crystal Reports: Enterprise login via the URL

Crystal Server Pages provide a rich set of functions to delivery your reports via the Web. You can use the standard ePortfolio report delivery, or you can customize your Web pages and Web report delivery.

If you want to call the report directly from a Web page, you will also need to provide the login to the Crystal Enterprise APS. You can include all this in your URL with

http://server/folder/viewrpt.cwr?
id=134&apsuser=guest
&apspassword=&apsauthtype=secEnterprise
.

The id is the number of the report object in the Enterprise database, and on Crystal Enterprise Standard you only have a Guest and an Administrator user.

Don't have Enterprise and are about to install it? Here's some helpful information.

First of all, a clean install works best. An upgrade is not guaranteed to go smoothly, and often the solution to upgrade installs is to just start over and do a clean install. So you may be ahead of the game to skip the intermediate step of attempting an upgrade.

Both a clean install and an upgrade can become problematic if you fail to complete the registration in a timely manner. So tend to that, right away.

Remember that Crystal Reports Enterprise is a complex application. Read the documentation thoroughly before installing. Take notes on what "gotchas" might arise in your particular environment and resolve those issues before beginning the install.

  • Sit down with a separate hard copy and highlight key items.
  • Make notes in the margins, and also compile a separate "To Do" list. Some of the items on your list will involve infrastructure assessments--and possibly infrastructure upgrades.
  • Don't install Crystal Reports Enterprise until you have ensured you have an adequate infrastructure for it.

If you are upgrading your Crystal Reports to Crystal Reports Enterprise, be sure to make a backup copy of all of your reports on a separate medium and set this aside. For example, grab an empty hard drive, put it in a USB or SATA drive box, and copy all of your reports to it. Then, unplug the box and put it out of harm's way until you have the new system up and running flawlessly.

The upgrade should be seamless, but "famous last words...." Prepare yourself with the proper backups and with the proper analysis tool.
