Crystal Reports: Enterprise Installation

The Web Component Server (WCS) in Crystal Reports 8.0 was a powerful feature to provide reports on a web server. In version 8.5, it was replaced by a five user license of Crystal Enterprise (CE) standard edition.

Enterprise 8.5

In the 8.5 era, we experienced some difficulty in making Crystal Enterprise operational on a machine that was previously running the CR 8.0 WCS. One solution is to rebuild your server and install CE on a clean machine but often this isn’t practical. So you will have to uninstall the WCS prior to installing CE.

As well as running the Windows uninstall for the Web Component Server, you will need to manually remove any files or folders relating to the WCS. They will be on your system drive in Program Files\Seagate Software Then do the same for entries in the Registry – look under Current User\Software\Seagate Software and Local Machine\Software\Seagate Software and remove any reference to the WCS.

Then, a clean install of Crystal Enterprise will run smoothly. Remember to register it within 30 days of installation.

Enterprise 9.0 and beyond

The same caveat of a clean installation applies, if you experience problems with the install. You also need to complete the registration in a timely manner.

Remember that Crystal Reports Enterprise is a complex application. Read the documentation thoroughly before installing. Sit down with a separate hard copy and highlight key items. Make notes in the margins, and also compile a separate "To Do" list. Some of the items on your list will involve infrastructure assessments--and possibly infrastructure upgrades. Don't install Crystal Reports Enterprise until you have ensured you have an adequate infrastructure for it.

If you are upgrading your Crystal Reports to Crystal Reports Enterprise, be sure to make a backup copy of all of your reports on a separate medium and set this aside. For example, grab an empty hard drive, put it in a USB drive box, and copy all of your reports to it. Then, unplug the box and put it out of harm's way until you have the new system up and running flawlessly.

The upgrade should be seamless, but "famous last words...." Prepare yourself with the proper backups and with the proper analysis tool.

All versions of Enterprise

To truly optimize your Crystal Reports Enterprise reporting system, the resources used to administer it, the infrastructure it runs on, and the satisfaction of report users, you need a copy of Report Analyzer, Enterprise Edition. This amazing tool will also help you troubleshoot your Crystal Reports Enterprise. To avoid mysterious deployment delays and the embarrassment that goes with them, buy Report Analyzer, Enterprise Edition before you buy Crystal Reports Enterprise.

If you already have Crystal Reports Enterprise and things have gone smoothly so far, that's great. But, don't wait for Murphy's Law to apply with a vengeance.

Enterprise Login

Crystal Server Pages provide a rich set of functions to delivery your reports via the Web. You can use the standard ePortfolio report delivery, or you can customize your Web pages and Web report delivery.

If you want to call the report directly from a Web page, you will also need to provide the login to the Crystal Enterprise APS. You can include all this in your URL with

http://server/folder/viewrpt.cwr?
id=134&apsuser=guest
&apspassword=&apsauthtype=secEnterprise
.

The id is the number of the report object in the Enterprise database, and on Crystal Enterprise Standard you only have a Guest and an Administrator user.
